Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed a new mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Benadir region, amid growing Insecurity after the Capital was rocked by attacks from the Islamist militant group.

Mr Hassan Mohamed Mungab was appointed through a presidential decree on Thursday. He was formerly the head of the Somali Government Military court.

He will be taking office from the outgoing mayor Mohamud Ahmed Nur Tarsan, who was in the office since 2010 becoming the longest-serving mayor.

Last month, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Sports and Youth but he publicly rejected.

Analysts say the new mayor’s Big Challenge is on improving the security of the Capital, which has worsened for the past one month.

Just hours after his appointment was declared to the media, the city was hit by a car bomb blast that was targeted in a Restaurant close to the headquarters of the National intelligence agency.
