SOMALIA-SAUDI ARABIA: HRW calls Saudi Arabia to stop deporting Somalis

Published: December 23, 2010

The New York based Human Rights Watch has strongly called the government of Saudi Arabia to stop the deportation of the Somalis to war torn Capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.
“The authority of Saudi Arabia should immediately stop deporting Somalis to war-torn Mogadishu, Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday.
“Deporting anyone to a war zone like Mogadishu is inhumane, but returning children is beyond comprehension,” said Rona Peligal, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. ” The Somalis deported on December 17 told Somalia media that they had been arrested by the Saudi police during sweep operations searching for illegal migrants in Jeddah”.
The organization encourages Saudi Arabia to confirm the safety of the Somalis in particularly those living in its country.
Saudi Arabia had deported an estimated 2,000 Somalis to Mogadishu in June and July, according to the United Nations refugee agency.
