USAID pledges Somalia $470 million to fight drought

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a meeting with the Head of the United States Aid Agency (USAID) Ambassador Samantha Power.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud shared with Samantha Power the plans of the Somali Government in the fields of fisheries, livestock and agriculture production, with priority being given to avoiding dependence on humanitarian aid and changing it to economic investment that leads to sustainable development.

The President praised the support and assistance of the USAID Agency to the people and the Somali Government, stressing the continuation of the acceleration of investment programs, the development of social services and economic growth.

The President of the Republic said that the government is focusing on programs to improve water management, energy generation, dealing with the challenges of climate change, continuing to build the Somali government and decentralizing the federal system so that the Somali people can achieve full self-sufficiency and widespread development.

For her part, Ms. Samantha Power promised that USAID will provide a grant of $470 million, making the amount allocated by the agency to Somalia $668 million.

This grant is aimed at dealing with drought and developing essential services.

Mrs. Samantha Power’s visit to the country further strengthens the cooperation and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
